Single Camera Techniques

This essay is about the techniques involved with singles camera productions. How the techniques differ from multi camera productions and the advantages and disadvantages of everything. Specifically how the lighting, sound and editing differ for the different techniques.

For single camera productions there is only one camera involved. This way the filmmaker can get in close and personal with the subject but they can also go as wide as they like because there are no other camera equipment that is in danger of getting in the way of the shot. The advantages of one camera is that the actors have more time to get involved with their characters and the director has more say over each individual shot. The disadvantages of this is that the shooting takes longer because there have to be more takes it can also be more expensive because they might have to have the location for longer or shoot more footage. An example of a single camera production is Extras.

The lighting for a single camera production is easier to control because you only have to light the scene in a certain way. Whereas for a multiple camera production you'd have to control the light everywhere because there are multiple cameras getting different angles and shots. The advantage of lighting a single camera production is that it's easier to control over the darker and light areas of the shot. The disadvantage of lighting a multiple camera production is that the shot can look fake and like it's shot in a studio. An example of this would be the Harry Potter franchise. They light their shots properly so the shot doesn't look like it was filmed in a studio.

The advantages of capturing sound in a single camera production is that you don't always need to see where the sound is coming form so you can capture the sound without capturing the footage. Also the sound could be taken separately and put over the footage in post production. The disadvantages of this is that it can take time and money to effectively capture all the sound that is necessary. Multiple camera productions would also have multiple sound recording equipment so they could capture all the sound they needed. An example of a product that records sound separately is a nature program. An example of this would be Planet Earth.

The editing phase of the production can be problematic with a single camera production because if you filmed an entire scene with just one camera than you'd have to watch the whole footage just to find the part you wanted. If you wanted to have variation of shots within the scene you'd have to film from different angles and positions. This would mean the footage you'd have to look through to find the shots you wanted would be huge. Multiple camera production would have even more footage to search through but they can also be edited live or mixed. Like on shows such as X factor. Whereas all footage must be edited afterwards for a single camera production. It can also be cheaper to use multiple camera because you can film more than one thing at the same time. This would mean that you can shoot on location for a shorter amount of time which will be cheaper. You'd also waste less footage.

Different genres within TV and film are suited to either single camera productions or multiple camera productions. For example a horror would be suited to a single camera. This is because the camera get in and personal with the actors and the scene so the audience can become more involved with what their seeing. This is the same with thrillers. They are also mainly single camera productions because the director can control the light to show or hide certain areas from the audience. Comedies such as sitcoms use multiple camera because some of them are filmed in studios. The would make the multiple camera setup easy to use and preferred to get all the angles possible. Soap operas would as use multiple camera because they have to quickly change between one set and another and it would save time and money to use more than one camera. An example of a soap that uses more than one camera is Eastenders. This is because they can to film on multiple sets all over the place.
