Purpose of the Music Video

Music videos have many purposes and exist for many reasons. In this essay I will talk about the why they exist and why they are becoming more and more popular. A music videos are made for multiple reasons; they promote the artist and they also the director. Anybody can watch a music video and because they are everywhere like TV and the internet they are free and easy to find.

Music videos can be used to promote the people involved. This can include the artists, the song, the record label. or the director. They can be promoted in various ways. An example of this would be the video for In Bloom by Nirvana.

In this video by Nirvana they are promoting themselves by being introduced so the audience would know who they are and the song they are about to perform.  They also have their name on their drum kit. This would let the audience recognize them.

Another example of promotion would be Thnks fr th Mmrs by Fall Out Boy. they promote themselves by having their name in big letters above their head. This would make the audience instantly recognize them and know who their listening to and seeing.

Directors can also promote themselves using music videos. They would produce a music video and make sure everyone knew who made it so the director would get the credit and become more well know. An example of this would be Mark Romanek. He directed the music video for the song Can't Stop for the band Red Hot Chili Peppers.

when a band has a major record label their music videos will be high budget productions with a huge cast and crew. They would cost a lot of money to make. Have costly special effects to make the video stand out and make people want to watch it. The costumes would be authentic and there might even be a celebrity in the video. An example of this would be the music video for November Rain by Guns N' Roses. This cost about $1 million and included costumes also included 1,500 extras.

Independent bands would have lower budget productions with basic locations and with hardly any cast and crew. An example of this would be the music video for Here it Goes Again by OK go. The video is very simple with just the band and a few treadmills. But the video is considered to be one of the best music videos ever made.

Some artits would make and distribute the video them selves. It is becoming easier to do so because of the internet. They would post the video on such sites as YouTube or Vimeo and anybody could see it. The advantages to doing it this way is that you don't have a producer or director telling you want to do and you could make the video how ever you like it. But the disadvantages of this would be that its expencive, the quality might not be as good and the distribution would be very basic. You wouldn't be backed by a record label that would be able to distribute your video on major TV channels or webistes such as Spotify or ITunes. An example of this would be the music video for Gravity by the bang Against the Current. They self produced their own videos until they were discovered on YouTube by a record label.

Every time an artist music video is seen or their song is played in the radio the record label would get money for it and some of that money would be paid to the artist. Every time the video gets played on a website like YouTube, the record label would be paid money. The more views the video got the more the record label and artist would be paid. This isn't always the cast because it can be quite hard to track every single view. This is also the cast with websites like ITunes. Every time a song is bought the record label and artist would get royalties. Smaller and less well known bands struggle to get their music heard because of the major record labels paying to get their music everywhere. They'd get their music on the radio more so more people would hear it. This would then get the song to the top of the charts and no one would really get a chase to hear the smaller bands music.

The 2 way media outlets people can access music videos is by the internet and TV. The most common way to watching music videos on the TV is on the music channels like MTV and Scuzz. The most popular ways in the internet are YouTube, Vimeo and ITunes. Because it is so easy to upload a music video on to websites like YouTube because its free but its hard to get noticed by a major record label. Artists like Justin Bieber got noticed on YouTube because there was hardly any music on there when he started. By now there is so many.

For example, the song above and beyond is on both Youtube and on Scuzz Tv.

Sometimes a artist promote them selves by being involved with a popular film. They would sing a song for a films that about to come out. This would then promote the artist every time the film is seen and also promote the film every time the song is played. Everyone would benefit because everyone is being promoted. Each party would also get paid every time either the song or the film would played. An example of this would be the song Ghost busters by Ray Parker Jr. The song was made to promote the film Ghostbusters and it featured the cast of the film as well as scenes from the film. Every time a toy or a piece of merchandise is sold, the people involved with film would get the money. But the popularity of the song would increase sales in merchandise so the song will directly and indirectly promote the film.

I think music videos have grown in popularity is that there are also sorts of genres for any music. The music it's self has become more and more popular so the demand for a music video to be made for each new song has grown. It's also so easy to find them on the internet and on the TV. Plus they're free.
