Styles and Conventions and techniques of a music video

For this essay I will be talking about the styles, conventions and techniques within music videos. I will be defining them and giving am example for each.

For some music videos the artists will perform their song for an audience. An example of this would be the song 155 by the band +44.

This is in-concert because the band is performing live to a audience.

Other music videos might consist of the band playing the song live but not to an audience. They would just perform it for the camera. An example of this would be the song Stay Together for the Kids, by the band Blink 182.

This is live footage because the band is playing the song but not to an audience, but to the camera.

Narrative and interpretive music videos are the most popular. This is because the video offers a visual interpretation of the narrative. This means that the video would have a story which either follows the lyrics or completely ignores them. The video might follow the lyrics word for word or may interpret them further. An example of a music video that takes inspiration for the lyrics but develops with further is the song Inhale by the band Stone Sour.

In the lyrics at the start it says "come one, come all to see the broke man". This video interprets this further and makes the lead character homeless.

An example that follows the narrative word for word would be the song Learn to Fly by the Foo Fighters.

This is an example of a narrative following word for word because the song is called Learn to Fly and the band have to learn to fly a plane to save everyone on the plan from crashing.

Surrealist and absurdist music videos are often unconventional and surprising. They also hardly ever resemble the lyrics to the song. They also express the feelings and meaning behind the song. An exmaple of this would be the song Wake Me Up When September Ends by the band Green Day.

This is because the singer Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this song just after his dad past away. He locked himself away for a few days and wrote this song. The lyrics don't specifically talk about his dads death but the music video gets the point across about loss and what it means for the people who live on.

Impressionist music videos aim to capture the emotional tone and the hidden messages within the song. Rather than following the lyrics word for word. This makes the music video more artistic. The video represents what the artists feels rather than showing the world as it is. An example of this would be the song Heart Shaped Box by the band Nirvana.

This is impressionist because the music video represents what the bands thoughts and feelings were. They used the video to get their thoughts about the world across.

Intertextual music videos reference other media texts and other subjects. Synergy music videos often reference films and TV shows or use footage form the film or TV show. Allusion music videos reference other media texts, an event, a person or a cultural or historical reference. A parody makes fun of another music video and a pastiche is a light hearted imitation of another artists style.
An example of homage is the song Dani California by the band Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

This is an example of homage because the band is dressing up like other artists that have influenced them. They did this by dressing up like them and paying tribute to them.

An example of a parody song is the song Do You Want to Build a Meth Lab.
This is a parody because it takes the well known song Do You Want to Build a Snowman from the film Frozen. Then changes the lyrics to make the parody.

Animated videos include animations. The entire video might be animated or just certain parts. An example of this would be El Manana by the band Gorillaz. This video is animated all the way through.

An example of a music video which is partly animated is Dare by the band Gorillaz.

This is partly animated because it has animated parts and non animated parts. The video is mainly animated but the head is not animated.

In some music videos the singer might need to lip sync. This is often needed when the speed of the song is changed like slow motion with the normal audio used. An example of this is the song I Write Sins Not Tragedies by the band Panic! At The Disco.

The video is lip synced because the music video isn't performed for the camera and the singer is miming.

Some Music Videos are edited so that each cut will be on the beat. This creates a quick and fast paced video which will create rhythm for the video.

This is cut to the beat which makes the video slow smoothly and links the visuals to the audio.

Some music videos involve effects which is added in post production. This could be anything from a bit of fire to the whole set moving. For example the song Rise of the Phoenix by the band Tenacious D

The last scene was created in post production and there is little bits of special effects throughout the video.

Some music videos use a split screen effect to show more than one thing happening on the screen at once. This makes non-linear editing easier to understand. An example of this would be the song All I NEED by the band Radiohead.

This uses split screen to portray show to different sequences at the same time.

Chroma Key is used for some music videos that used a green or blue screen. This is used show any background that is needed. The unwanted color behind the subject is removed (chroma keyed) out so that any image can be projected behind the subject without seeing any of the green or blue screen. An example of this would be the song My Way by the band Limp Bizkit.

This uses a green screen to project a city landscape in the back ground. This puts the focus on the band and also shows interesting and eye catching visuals in the back ground.

Music videos could use different camera movements to make the video more exciting. Using movements like pans, tracking shots, tilts, and crab shots creates flow and a sense of direction for the music video. An example of this would be the song Walk. By the band Foo Fighters.

In the music video there are a variation of camera movements used. For example 1:08 minutes in the camera tracks Dave Grohl as he walks through a traffic jam.

Another example would be 4:22 minutes in when the camera pans into the next scene.

Different camera angles and shot types can enhance the audiences excitement. If a music video only used the same length of shot and one camera angle then it would be very boring. If lots of different angles and shot types are used then it can entertain the viewer. Meaning and tone can be created as well. An example of a music video that uses different shot lengths and angles is the song Ooh La by The Kooks.

This music video uses different shot lengths too make some pasts of the video quicker than others. It does this by matching the quick and slow parts of the song. Within the song there are also different angles.

The mise-en-scene is very important within the music video because it can reinforce the meaning and mood of the music and also give subtle hints at what the lyrics mean. Mise-en-scene can also reinforce the bands image. They might always have the same setting, props or clothing. The mise-en-scene could also play homage to other bands by they dress up like other bands. An example of a band that use mise-en-scene to show their image is Crowder. He always where the same kind of shirt and hat.
